Discussing the New Texas Abortion Law from a Christian Viewpoint

Social media was set aflame (what’s new?) after the Supreme Court declined to prevent Texas’ new abortion law from taking effect. It is a law designed to ban abortions after a baby’s heartbeat can be detected, which can be anywhere from 5-8 weeks into a pregnancy. What makes this law unique from all other attempts is that it does not allow for the government to enforce the law but calls for private citizens to do so through civil suits; basically, as I understand it, anyone can sue someone else who has aided, abetted, or performed an abortion and would be awarded at least $10,000 if the suit is won. There are no explicit exceptions made for rape or incest, but there is one for medical emergencies.

It is a novel approach to curb abortions and potentially avoid the ire of the courts, and for that reason many pro-lifers are celebrating. I think it is worth taking a step back, however, and considering the practicality and wisdom of going this route.
