A Primer on Progressive Christianity

I’ve written brief primers on Calvinism and open theism, and one that I think will be helpful to readers would be on “progressive Christianity.” It is a common term used by both proponents as well as detractors, but it can sometimes be a nebulous one with a large umbrella. It can even be a moving target as both sides redefine it based on their convenience. Hopefully, I can provide some clarity and useful general guidelines.

As with summarizing any position, you have to stick with general commonalities, knowing full well that there will always be people who wear the label but do not agree with all of the common features (or people who are described very well by the common features but react with umbrage at the label). I make this caveat because there are always people who say something like, “I know some people who are progressive Christians but don’t believe X that you say progressive Christians believe, therefore you are intentionally misrepresenting them and engaging in propaganda!” Sigh. It’s important to remember that exceptions or niche positions do not disprove observed general descriptions.

That said, I also try to aim to write these primers in a way that is fair and accurate to the position at hand, even if they have to be simplified for purposes of having a starting point. Doing this is good practice for anyone when it comes to discussion before going into critiques.

With those caveats aside, we can turn to describing progressive Christianity.

New Website and Podcast

Starting a new website with friends that corresponds with the podcast we tentatively started called InterChristianity. We have a couple of episodes up on Spotify and other platforms now. I’ll still be writing here but will try to add content there that is relevant to the aims of that site, particularly when it comes to Christian engagement with the world.
